Overview
The MASKENBALL started as a field fix. It became a legend.
Crew of the JG41 1st Besatzung Gruppe identified a critical weak point beneath the Großer Hund’s head unit and responded the only way field soldiers do — spare armour, welded fast. The chin guard worked. Survival rates improved. Word spread. Other units adopted the modification, and maintenance teams began painting skull markings across the new armour. Multiple masked interceptors moving in formation became known as a masquerade ball. The designation followed.
The MASKENBALL is the K-type KYKLOP with the chin guard formalised as the Ausf. M configuration — enhanced shoulder armour, extended foot platforms from the space-capable ALTAIR, and a four-launcher Neupanzerschreck. Agile enough to run down faster PKA suits rather than merely hold ground. The chin guard made it survivable. The skull markings made it feared.
The Rotes Herz machine of Panzerjäger Abt.12 9th Kompanie has its own history. Deployed as a Late Type, upgraded to K, modified in the field to M. After a glancing headshot damaged its AI core it became unusually aggressive — almost too fierce. It survived a Falke close air support strike, limped back to base, and received a DACHSHUND head replacement that restored its AI to cold and calculating. That machine is documented in full in Vol. 3.
The MASKENBALL is explored in the Ma.K. Lincoln Report Vol. 3 — HUND, available separately.
