The Build I Owed This Kit

I built the Barbatos Lupus Rex once before. A sponsor asked for clean. I delivered clean. It performed, it was published, and it never sat right.

This is the version I actually wanted to make.

FIRELINE 001 documents the full studio treatment of Bandai's Full Mechanics 1/100 Lupus Rex — a machine from a universe where combat is kinetic. These suits don't exchange beam fire at range. They dent, scrape, cook from the inside, and drag themselves home covered in dust and hydraulic fluid. Every surface decision in this build has a story reason: scavenged armour carries a different texture than factory plate, chipping concentrates where the machine hits things, and the finish is asymmetric because the damage was.

The entire build is hand-brushed. No airbrush touches this model — not the base coats, not the weathering, not the finish. Every chip is painted on, not chipped off.

This is both a gallery book and a bench document. The gallery pages show what changed — the sponsor build and this one, side by side. The bench pages show how.

📘 What's Inside

FIRELINE 001 REX · 32 Pages · Full Colour · Softcover
A4 wire-bound field manual. Lays flat during painting sessions. Premium satin stock — durable and wipeable. Clear protective covers front and back.

✦ The Complete Build

  • The studio re-shade — replacing the toy palette with a grounded military scheme, and the reasoning behind every colour call
  • Sticker elimination through hand-brushed layering
  • Additive chipping — the full painted-on system: colour order, tool comparison, and the unifying pass that makes five armour schemes read as one worn machine
  • Why this machine gets no panel lining — and what replaces it
  • Two surface languages on one model — rough scavenged plate against cold-rolled factory steel
  • The exposed inner frame sequence — base metal, picked-out hydraulics, oil pin-wash
  • Oils without an airbrush — dust, streaking, and asymmetric heat staining
  • Markings at 1/100 — why small and tight reads big
  • Before / after gallery — the sponsor build and the studio build, side by side
  • Integrated build narrative — the story logic behind every surface decision

⚙️ Why It Matters

FIRELINE is the new studio series: one complete build per volume, methodology extracted, nothing padded. REX is volume one. Every technique in it was executed with brushes and hobby-shop paints — no airbrush, no specialist equipment — and every technique transfers to whatever is on your bench next. If you followed the build on YouTube, this is the full methodology in sequence, with the reasoning that never fit inside an episode, in a format that lives on the bench instead of a second screen.
